A Sneak Preview

Back Cover:
Ten years ago Tristan Shane had failed to pick sides and hepaid with the ultimate price—his family.  Enslaved as a post-apocalyptic gladiator, he is now faced with a similar dilemma, serve the despot  Queen and murder her innocent sister, or face certain death himself. What will he choose?
Tristan Shane was a moderate before the nuclear and economic crisis which plunged the world into darkness. While his sister Aidia ran off to fight the rebel’s war he desperately tried to hang onto normalcy and lost his wife and children in the process. Spending the next ten years as the Crown’s favored and the mob’s favorite Gladiator, he never expects to meet the Queen’s sister, Alexandra, a Healer.
She claims to be the much whispered about Savior sent to heal the wounded Earth and oceans, the one who would bring about her cruel sister’s dethroning. But is she? Or is she just a fraud? But he quickly learns her erotic touch has the power to heal his heart and his to save her life. But as the passion heightens and the danger increases will they have forever or will he have to give up everything to save the planet?
Excerpt:
“What is it you want, Veronica?”
She leaned in close and whispered seductively, “Why, you know I only want you, Tristan.”
He snatched her up by her throat, pinned her against the wall and kissed her passionately, brutally, and without clemency. When he pulled away she was smiling with a darkness that made him angry. She was a power-hungry mongrel who played on her husband’s weaknesses and jealousies. Tristan hated her. And he hated himself for f***ing her. But this was his life. He let go of her and walked away.
“Is my poor Gladiator jealous? There’s really no need for that, is there? You know you’re my favorite.”
“What is it you really want, Veronica?”
She came up behind him and seductively began to ease off his armor. He was covered in sweat and blood and he felt her shiver against his body. And as always there was a twinge of nausea that would precede the raw animal aggression.
She turned him around. He looked at her. There was no doubt about it; she was beautiful. But she was poisonous—a rattlesnake with crystal green eyes and flaming red hair. Her father had promised peace and a return to normalcy and democracy in the wake of economic and nuclear disaster, and instead this was what had become of the world. And she was no doubt always enjoining her father to maintain her life in this fashion. He loathed her. He detested her. And every time he had sex with her his intense hatred for himself deepened a little bit more.
“My dear, sweet Gladiator, as much as I’d like to celebrate your victory with you tonight, my husband wishes me to share his bed. But fear not—I do have a consolation prize for you.”
His skin began to crawl. Veronica had a twisted way of looking at what constituted a consolation prize; it was usually just a groupie who wanted to watch what the queen did with the equivalent of rock stars of the former United States of America. And he usually did the dog and pony show. But sometimes Veronica required something to prove his loyalty to her. That would be more complicated.
“What is it this time?”
She smiled. His response had given her the mistaken impression that he cared.
“The rebels have been restless. And it seems there is a young woman we have in our prison whom they want terribly. Well, frankly, they are in two minds as to what to believe. It is rumored she is the mythical Healer. The one meant to find her soul mate, so together they will lead our Nation out of the so-called darkness into which it has plunged itself.”
“And what do you want me to do?”
“Oh Tristan, why are you being so defensive? I just want you to find out whether she really is the Healer, and report to me if she is.”
“And then, what?”
“And then you let me handle it,” Veronica said, sliding back into the evil skin that was her natural state. “The rebels have no idea what it takes to run a country.”
The image of his wife being raped and murdered flooded him and it was all he could do not to throttle the queen right then and there.
“So can I count on you to do this for me or do I need to find someone else who can?”
He was no one’s hero. But she had said young woman. And he couldn’t just allow his wife’s fate to be visited upon some other unsuspecting girl. “I’ll do what I can.”
Veronica ran her index finger down his cheek and whispered, “Good boy, Tristan,” she purred. “Guard! She’ll be delivered before the night is over. I don’t know when I’ll be able to return to you, but I expect that you’ll have had enough time to gain her trust by then.”
Tristan’s stomach churned. The Healer? In the beginning there had been whispers of it. But he had never believed in such a thing. It had been years since the crown had feared anything. And now this. He said nothing as the queen was escorted away. He was left to think about the young woman he might be forced to turn over in the end.

BLOODSTONE

I wonder how many times it's going to take before I get tired of using Daniel Craig as a physical model for me to let my imagination take hold  and run away with it.

I have started and run with a million different story ideas. And I realized I wanted to work on a book 2 of a series. I had two choices, The Gladiator Chronicles or Bounty Hunter. I have two terrific homes for those series TGC is with MuseItUp Publishing and Bounty Hunter is with Hydra Publications. I received a revise and resubmit for Oracle. They said I was thisclose to a contract. I know what needs to be done, but it's really hard for some reason for me to get excited about that series at the moment. So I stepped away from it no worries, it'll happen when the time is right. However there was a desire in me to write a second book in the Bounty Hunter series as well. I'd go to it. Write a chapter. Lose the magic. I didn't want to repeat what I had done in the first book. Have I mentioned I've never written a book 2? Finding my way to book 2 wasn't easy but seeing that the character of James Lyle is a dead ringer for his cousin, Logan Mitchell the hero from book 1 figuring him out wasn't too hard. The heroine presented a different set of challenges.

What's her story. What's the reason she is doing what she's doing? The story just sort of unfolded on me and that doesn't happen very often. Or at least not as often or as easily as I'd like. Yes, I have five contracts, but I write EVERY day. And I feel the pressure to produce. I write on the grittier side and I tend to mix a lot of romance in. But there is this attitude that the two can't mix. Then there's the question of my scifi/fantasy/futuristic stuff I mix in a lot of sex, and science is totally made up. This keeping the science in science fiction makes me roll my eyes because I know it's a swipe at what I do. As for the people who can nail that sort of thing congratulations, you make money at it hey I'm right there with you. But I think I'm just as legitimate as the 'hard science' crowd. Which is why I finally got out of my own way and decided to have fun writing Bounty Hunter 2:Bloodstone.

It took me several months but I got here. And I plan on running with it.

5 Figures

5 Figures. That's what I have a dream of. I have conquered the goal of publication. I'm proud to say my books, No Ordinary Love, Another Way To Die, and Gladiator found a home with MuseItUp. And two others Bounty Hunter and Set Fire to the Rain found a home with Hydra Publications. And with the state of the publishing industry in such flux who's to say that the big six won't have all gone the way of the dinosaur? But that doesn't change the dream. The dream is to receive an advance and to have bookstore distribution. I really wish the Big Six and the E-Publishing industry would work together to make this a good place for authors to be. As it is the bottom line drives the industry. It's been said writing is art, publishing is a business. And the fight for shrinking shelf space is fierce.

Now, I've been called an instant gratification girl. Am I really cut out for the print side of the industry? Long waits to hear from agents. Even longer wait to hear from the Big Six. And that's not even the half of it. But I desire a traditional print contract. Are they screwing they author, probably. But the independent e-pubs aren't necessarily all great shakes either. To crucify one over the other is really pointless and to blame Amazon is just ludicrous. The are just exploiting the weaknesses of the traditional model.

Hey, I love Amazon. I love my e-publishing houses. Lea and Frank are fantastic. But I still dream of seeing a hardcover version of my book on the shelf in stores. It's just they way I feel. Hey I have a series with Muse, and a potential one with Hydra. I plan on keeping them going. But for now I want the traditional sell so that's what I'm aiming for. July Savvy Authors is bringing literary agents to its website. I plan on being ready with something to show. So that's what I want-5 figures.

It's A Giveaway Day!

I left Cheryl's post up a little longer than I normally would if only because I think what she does is a good thing and I corrected the link. If you scroll down to the bottom of yesterday's post you'll see where I added it. But now onto today!

I had such a positive response to the excerpt of GLADIATOR I've decided to giveaway an ARC to one lucky winner. Also in this prize package finalized formats of my earlier releases Another Way To Die and No Ordinary Love. All you have to do is leave a comment as to who you would like to see as the heroes in these three books. Here are the blurbs from all three, and a little taste of all three of them.

I saw Daniel Craig as Tristan Shane, Daniel Logan, and James, the half-breed alien-human. Leave your comments. And win some books!

ANOTHER WAY TO DIE:

Blurb:
Almira Sands has been running all her life from her abusive father Jack. She knows one day the running will end and only she or her father will be left standing. What she doesn’t expect is to be kidnapped by Daniel Logan.
Daniel Logan is a mercenary who only intended to use Almira long enough to get to safety, but when she takes a bullet and almost dies he finds himself questioning who he is and what he does and saves her life.
On the run and falling in love they are forced to decide: a life on the run together, or face her father, the man who has the power to separate them forever.

NO ORDINARY LOVE:

Blurb:
A human rebel against the Capturian Forces, Caliope was enslaved for five years and tortured. She never expects to meet James, a half-breed too human for his own good.
Their connection is electric.
Their love is forbidden.
Their daughter may be Earth’s only hope.

Special Guest Cheryl Pierson

Although I normally blog about writing, marketing or books, today I’ve been wondering about something that I can’t get out of my mind. It crept up on me in its own sneaky fashion, until I finally realized that there’s no escaping it, and no turning back. It’s an obsession that is fast rivaling my daily writing “fix”.

Have you ever gone to Facebook and clicked on one of these pages set up by animal rescue organizations? I did. Now, it has taken hold of me and won’t let go. The pleas for these animals are desperate. In many states, the organizations work to pull animals from shelters that are known as “kill” shelters. Dogs and cats that come in sick or hurt, or the ones that are aggressive—even if they are just afraid—are the first to be put down.

Yes, I realize that not all stray animals can be saved. But did you know that many animals that are brought to the shelters are “owner surrendered” pets? Why would someone do this? For many reasons—I think one of the main ones being that owners believe that taking an animal to the shelter and ‘dropping it off’ will result in the shelter finding it a good home. The hard truth is that most shelters are running over. Dropping off your animal is probably not going to result in a preferable outcome of adoption. Most likely, the animal is going to be euthanized within the week.

One story that really tore at me when it was posted was the picture of a sweet golden retriever mix, that was taken in her cell at the shelter. Her eyes were kind. She didn’t understand what had happened to her world. After living with her master for 12 years, she had been “dropped off” at the shelter when her human had to go into a nursing home. I guess no one in the family was able to take her in to finish out her last years. And I can only imagine what anguish her master must have gone through, knowing that his family had surrendered his loving pet to a shelter. “Please help Sadie,” the post began. “She is alone and scared, and doesn’t understand why she’s at the shelter.”

Sadie’s story haunted me all day. But it wasn’t the only one. A few hours later, I saw that Middle Mutts, one of these wonderful organizations, had posted the story of yet another sweet little dog whose family had “surrendered” him as well. Only, they had moved off and left him to fend for himself rather than try to find a home for him. How could a family do this? I pictured them driving away from their home in their mini-van, the dog sitting in the front yard watching them leave, the husband and wife comforting themselves with the hope that “maybe one of the neighbors will take him in…” Nope. Animal control got him first and he went to the shelter, where he awaits certain death if no one adopts him or sponsors him.

There are too many stories like this to describe in this short post. What I hope to do is to let you know how you can help these animals.

First: Click on the pages for these animal rescue organizations on FB and LIKE them—Here are three wonderful, very worthy animal rescue activist groups that are in the business of working tirelessly to get these sweet fur babies pulled and transported (with help from some guardian angels across this great country of ours!) to their new owners.

Second: When these notices begin to come in on your FB page about the animals that are going to be put to sleep (PTS), the ones who are injured and in need of treatment, the pleas for fostering or transportation funding, RESHARE them on your wall. You never know who might see these pictures and stories and want to adopt that dog/cat, or maybe knows of someone else who will. This doesn’t cost a thing and is a wonderful tool to “get the word out” about these animals, especially if you ask your friends to reshare, too!

Third: Most of these animals have a special “CHIP-IN FUND” that has been set up just for their needs. When you donate to it, the money goes to THAT ANIMAL for their shots, medical care (many of them have been abused or neglected terribly) and transportation if necessary. Most people think their contributions won’t matter. I have seen time and again where the contributions inched upward each day and finally reached the amount needed to pay for the “vetting” for these animals. Even $1 is important. It all matters. Some of the animals require surgery or medical treatment for other conditions. These are the ones that desperately need funding to help them get that treatment and get to a new home. If you have a Paypal account, it takes less than a minute to click on the link for the Chip-In and transfer a few bucks over.

Fourth: Talk about it. Blog about it. Get the word out. Not all support has to be financial! We all have to do what we are able to do, and some can do more than others, but many of these people in these organizations are volunteers. Is there something you could do at your local shelter? Could you start a group like this on your own? Fostering dogs until a home can be found for them is a wonderful service to provide if you are able to do this. There’s no monetary gain, but the reward you get from these loving animals will more than make up for it. Many have never had a kind word or loving touch.

Have you been inspired yet? I hope so. Many of these stories have wonderfully happy endings thanks to regular people like you and me. Sadie, the 12-year-old golden retriever, was rescued within a couple of days of being posted and reshared again and again.

Another remarkable story is that of Vex, a dog who had been hit by a car in Romania and was paralyzed in his back legs. He had been dragging himself around, wearing his hide off for months. But the money was raised to fly him to America to a new loving home. Someone donated the money for him to have a little cart for his back legs so he could get around on his wheels. What a happy ending!

Want to be part of something wonderful? Get involved. You’ll be ‘heart happy’ as soon as you do.

A Gladiator's Choice

Often when I sit down to work on a project there are always choices I am forced to make. What is the story about? Who is the hero? The heroine? What do they look like? Where do they live? What do they do?

With GLADIATOR it was simple. An ordinary man placed in an extreme situation. Tristan Shane, stripped of all that matters and that he loves, robbed of the life he's made for himself with his family by a despot queen in post apocalyptic times and enslaved as a futuristic gladiator he now is filled with rage, bitterness, and hatred and lives only for the fight. Who can love him? Who can heal him? Enter the queen's innocent sister, the healer. So many other choices went into this story. And I loved writing it, Daniel Craig makes a yummy  reward for hard work. Enjoy the following excerpt and if you wish to read more follow the notification link at the bottom, scroll down to the bottom of that page and click on Notify Me for when the book releases. :)

My Tribute To Adam Yauch

Every generation adds something to the music world. Whether their parents understand it or not they do. For my generation it was rap and the alternative scene. The pioneers like Grand Master Flash, Run DMC, Pearl Jam, and Nirvana are bands and groups who will always be remembered. I remember my cousin Brian detesting the group the Beastie Boys above all others. But from You Gotta Fight For Your Right to Party, to the groundbreaking Sabatoge video which played out like an 1970's police procedural on acid they were Hall of Famers in their own right. And sadly, a few days ago, one of the founding members of the Beastie Boys, Adam Yauch lost his battle with Cancer. I'm not sure what kind of Cancer but to my mind it doesn't matter. It's a tragic loss.

It's always sad when someone from the creative world dies. But the Beastie Boys were politically aware of international issues and often had the courage to speak out on them. I know, there is some opinion that artists should keep their political opinions to themselves, especially when it's not beneficial or popular to their career to do so. But I disagree. I think it's our differences and our ability to co-exist despite them that make our country such a great place to live. Adam believed in peace. And right now it seems like hate and fear are the buzzwords right now.

In my state I am ashamed to say the KKK marched in our state capital. The hate and fear in their hearts saddens me. And as much as I believe in freedom of speech I think of them more as a terrorist organization than as a political group.

Adam would have something to say about the KKK. As I said he was politically aware. When politicians use one group's fear and resentment against another to further their own agenda they should be forced to give up their campaign. But I suppose the day that happens is the day Adam rises up and returns from the dead all Lazarus or Jesus like.

The world of hip hop has endured many a great loss, Grand Master Jay immediately comes to mind as he was a pioneer and well beloved, add Adam Yauch to the list. He will be missed.

Paying It Forward

Today I want to talk about two people. One who is my best friend, and the other who is this awesome lady who runs the Moondance International Film Festival http://MoondanceFilmFestival.com.

First up is Elizabeth English. This dynamic woman not only runs a well-respected international film festival celebrating women and writers as  equals in the world filmmaking industry, along with filmmakers and composers, she is someone who relays her experiences through advice, enthusiasm and inspiration, over the 13 years she's been the founder, executive director and artistic director of the festival, giving guidance to talented, aspiring writers, composers and indie filmmakers.

She sees everyone in filmmaking process as equals. From actor to composer to writer to director and producer. No one is catered to but everyone is treated with the respect an artist commands whatever field they're in. I really enjoyed speaking with Elizabeth and like her no bullshit attitude coupled with her love for what she does. It's clear she loves what she does and while I won't be able to attend Moondance in person I am more than happy to place an ad in Moondance's program to support her vision, and promote my books. A two for one shot. I entered the short story category and even if I don't win I feel like it was a great opportunity afforded to me by someone who had the guts to shine the spotlight on the writer in several categories and not just one. And if something does come of my entry fee? I'll have Elizabeth to thank for putting on such an awesome festival for it.

Second up my best friend Missy. Recently a publishing house closed where here short story/e-book was to be published. She never even got her content edits. She submitted to other houses but got revise and resubmit letters. It was discouraging to her. So I snuck and submitted it to Hydra Publications who read it and accepted it. No one deserves the success more. She has been nothing but supportive of me and my dreams when others would laugh or worse be dismissive of what I do as a 'hobby'. As best friends we've been through the fire and I am extremely happy to see her meet the success of a first sale recaptured.

Finally there's Pamela Turner and Elise VanCise. Pamela has been a good friend and a great sounding board, if it weren't for her I may have never taken the blinders off and embraced the e-publishing world the way I should have all along. As for Elise, she's my best phone friend and both are talented authors and artists in their own right,

I'm just happy to also announce I've landed my fourth contract, this one with Hydra Publications, for my book, Bounty Hunter. Keep on, keepin' on folks.
